The missing Thursday in Riudecanyes

2026-03-01

It is not easy to find places where streets are named after the days of the week. Riudecanyes, a small village in the Baix Camp region of Catalonia with just over a thousand inhabitants, is one such example.

Curiously, there are streets named after every day from Monday to Sunday, except for Thursday.

The explanation is linked to the traditional Corpus festivities. Each neighbourhood celebrated its festival on a particular day of the week, and the street took the name of that day.

Thursday, however, was the main celebration of Corpus for the entire village. For that reason it was not associated with any specific neighbourhood and no street was given that name.

This curious detail was also mentioned in the TV programme El Foraster broadcast by TV3 and dedicated to Riudecanyes.
