August 28, 1821, the city of Santa Maria Comitan dependent Ciudad Real de Chiapas (now San Cristobal de las Casas) declared itself as a free and independent state, both of the Captaincy General of Guatemala and Spain and invites the other municipalities of Chiapas province to do the same.
