On 29 August 1944, after the withdrawal, a column of German soldiers of the 3rd Panzer-Grenadiers Division, a unit of the Wehrmacht, shot dozens of men, some under 18, in retaliation . In total, 86 people in four towns, Robert-Espagne, Couvonges, Beurey-on-Saulx and Mognéville, were massacred. They spent three days before the survivors returned to the village and discovered the carnage.
