The historical inspiration dates back to October 16, 1866. While Austrian troops out by the Porta Nuova (south), the troops of the Kingdom of Italy entering the Verona Porta Vescovo (east) and stopped at the nearby Plaza de Santa Toscana, later called Piazza XVI Ottobre.
All this 13 days after the Treaty of Vienna, which marked the end of the third war of independence and the transfer of Veneto from Austria to France and, on October 19, to the Kingdom of Italy. The plebiscite of October 21 to 22 had almost unanimous consensus,, to the annexation agreement.
