1944. Cassino (Italy). Destruction of the Monastery of Montecassino.
In one of the most tragic episodes of the Second World War on February 15, 1944 Montecassino Abbey was completely destroyed by a heavy bombardment of the Allies, who mistakenly believed that German soldiers were hiding. The treasures of art and rare books from the monastery had been rescued by the German army. After the war, the abbey was rebuilt.
