Born on March 27, 1620 and executed on September 12, 1642, he was one of the favorites of King Louis XIII. He was commonly called "Monsieur le Grand" in reference to his position as Grand Squire of France.
He led the last of many conspiracies against the king's powerful chief minister of state, Cardinal Richelieu, who, in agreement with the king, had him tried and beheaded.
